What Do You Tell Your Children When Your Getting a Divorce? An Open Letter to the Children of Divorce

A divorce is when two people decide that they don't want to be married to each other anymore. When that happens, their mom and dad live in separate homes but they spend time and share time with their children. Even when your parents get divorced, they will ALWAYS be your parents. Mom and dad may separate and divorce each other, but they never will divorce their children. A divorce ends a marriage. A divorce never ends a family.

Most parents have tried very hard to make things work before they decide to get a divorce. The decision that they made to get a divorce was very difficult [or both of them because they know it affects you and the whole family. There are many reasons why mom and dad get divorced, usually it's because they are just not happy living together anymore. NO MATTER WHAT, A DIVORCE IS NEVER A KID'S FAULT.

Getting used to your mom and dad living apart takes time. Sometimes you feel sad, angry, worried, confused, hurt, and often afraid about the future. Often you feel all these things as the same time and it could mix you up. It's ok for kids to talk about their feelings with their parents and relatives or trusted friends. But remember, a divorce is not the end of the world. They say time heals all things and with time, things will get worked out. Though you may live in two different houses and things may change, parents and kids always remain a family, even after a divorce. You can continue to love both your mom and your dad and remember your mom and your dad will always love and take care of you. SOME FAMILIES ACTUALLY BECOME STRONGER AFTER A DIVORCE. THINGS WILL GET BETTER.
