This year Valentine’s Day falls on a Friday. A holiday, that symbolizes love, to start off the weekend! This sounds like a win.
For those who are single, going out, and partying till the “last call” is an option. For new couples sending heart emojis, this is the perfect time to mention labels. Or, even better— the“I love You’s.”
However, for the several Americans who fall under the 50% divorce rate, this holiday can be extremely difficult. Especially if they’re going through a custody battle.
Unfortunately, Friday is usually the day that parents share visitation with their former partner. When there are chocolate hearts, and red balloons everywhere you go—it’s not easy to pretend that “everything’s okay.”
Fortunately, there are ways to set healthy boundaries, and avoid any confrontation on this holiday.
TIPS TO AVOID AN ARGUMENT
- Do not engage in small talk with your Ex. Don’t be cold, but don’t feel the need to catch up.
- Try to be extra positive. Remember, this doesn’t mean strike up a conversation, but any negativity can be emotionally draining for yourself, and your child/children.
- Make this visit as short as possible. As soon as your kids are settled, be on your way.
- Do not buy anything for your former spouse or partner. It’s very common for people to feel nostalgic, and to “remember the good times,” on holidays—so much that they follow an old Valentine’s tradition. This usually ends in disappointment on one end, followed by a nasty argument.
- If it’s not your weekend for having time with your children, try to avoid social media, watching home movies or doing anything that reminds you of your marriage. Keep busy, be responsible, and have fun!
Most importantly: in order to show true kindness to anyone, we must be kind to ourselves.
Treat yourself to a happy Valentine’s Day, without a fight.
