The majority of Americans have been guilty of it.
Whether we are walking across the street, or driving a car, we just can’t put our phones away. Unfortunately, that means more and more tragedies occur.
As we discussed in our post the, Textalyzer, National Safety Council states that cell phone use while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes each year. And, almost 390,000 car accidents occur a year due to cell phone distraction. The fact that every day a new app or form of social media is being invented, isn’t helping the matter.
However, there are simple ways that can decrease tragedies due to cell phone use. Below are some tips we find useful.
Helpful Tips To Decrease Cell Phone Distraction
- Set up the Do Not Disturb auto response on your phone while you drive. The person texting will be notified that you are driving and can’t answer at the moment.
- Turn off all social media notifications.
- Reach out to people who you know may text or call you while you’re driving.
- Although bluetooth is a helpful tool, it’s still easy to be distracted. Cell phone use behind the wheel reduces the amount of brain activity associated with driving by 37 percent. If the call can wait another mile, pull over to a parking lot or safe spot, and make your phone call then.
All of us can be a little careless sometimes—and many young drivers will continue to TikTok and drive. That’s why it’s important to stress this to others: before you get behind the wheel, or cross the street, stop and think,“how can I do my part to protect myself and others from a tragedy occurring?”
Please remember, a quick text or social media post isn’t worth losing a life, yours or someones elses. Instagram can wait.
