In Sept. 2017, Equifax announced a data breach that exposed the personal information of 147 million people. Recently, Equifax has announced a global settlement that will award 700 million dollars to those affected.
If you were affected by the data breach you cannot file a claim just yet. You can sign up for email alerts at
FTC.gov/Equifax.
You may be eligible for up to ten years of free credit monitoring and reimbursement of up to 20,000 dollars for time you spent recovering from the effects of the breach.
The claims process will start after your court approval. Once you are signed up for FTC email alerts, if you were affected by the breach you will be notified after the court approves the settlement.
In the meantime, save any documents you have related to your efforts to avoid or recover from identity theft after the 2017 Equifax data breach.
